Tioga Bridge (2019-2021)
Inspection & Rehabilitation Design
County of Simcoe – Adjala Tosorontio, Ontario
The Tioga Bridge was built in 1968 and spans over the Pine River on County Road 13. It is a three-span slab on a precast concrete girder superstructure supported on reinforced concrete “hammerhead” piers. Each span is simply supported with a total of four (4) expansion joints on the bridge. The 54.41 m long deck has a 20° skew. The overall width of the deck is 10.97 m with a travel width of 9.14 m and a 190 mm thick deck slab. Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. was retained by the County of Simcoe to undertake a detailed field investigation, including a detailed deck condition survey and an evaluation of this skewed bridge. Based on the evaluation and inspection, recommendations for rehabilitation were developed. Life cycle cost comparisons were undertaken of the options. The recommended solution was to complete a superstructure replacement. Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. designed a three-span continuous reinforced slab on steel girder replacement superstructure for this 60 m long bridge. The sub-structure was rehabilitated using some refacing with passive cathodic protection. Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. completed an Environmental Assessment, Preliminary Design, Detailed Design, Contract Preparation and Tendering Assistance, and Contract Administration.
