Emergency Repairs
Port Toronto & City of Toronto – Toronto, Ontario
Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. (DDA) provided bridge engineering design services for the emergency repairs in August 2019 to close the leaf which was stuck in the up position. As a result of machinery failure, the City of Toronto/Ports Toronto was unable to close the bridge which became stuck in the open position. DDA, along with Stafford Bandlow Engineering (a Division of WJE) and FACCA Construction worked to develop a procedure to stabilize the bridge in the open position and a method to close the bridge using cranes and winches. Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. designed temporary works to stabilize the span and additional temporary attachments to be used to lower the leaf to the closed position. Once lowered DDA also prepared detailed designs to maintain the span closed under traffic.
