Archie Duckworth Bridge
Inspection & Evaluation
County of Simcoe – Simcoe, Ontario
The Archie Duckworth Bridge was constructed in 1973. It is a two (2) span (18.2m – 27.4m) bridge consisting of a cast in place post-tensioned span and cantilever half-span, completed with a precast concrete girder “drop on” span. The bridge is located on Centre Street in the Village of Angus and carries two (2) lanes of traffic. The bridge is skewed 24 degrees. Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. was retained by the County of Simcoe to undertake a detailed inspection including a detailed deck condition survey. Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. also completed an evaluation of this skewed, mixed form bridge. Based on the evaluation and inspection, recommendations for rehabilitation were developed. Life cycle cost comparisons were undertaken of the options. The recommended solution was to rehabilitate the bridge by patching the deck and overlaying the sidewalls. New parapets with aluminum railings were proposed as well as replacement of the expansion joint and construction of approach slabs. Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. completed an Environmental Assessment, Preliminary Design, Detailed Design, Contract Preparation and Tendering Assistance and the Construction Contract was awarded and proceeded to Construction in May 2020.
