Don Valley Parkway and Eastern Avenue Interchange (2021 – 2022)
Detailed Inspection and Structural Evaluation
City of Toronto – Toronto, Ontario
The Don Valley Parkway (DVP) and Eastern Avenue Interchange consist of four (4) structures with fifty-four (54) concrete slabs on steel girder spans. The interchange spans over one (1) of the busiest expressways in Toronto, a Metrolinx corridor, the Don River, and other public and private infrastructures in Downtown Toronto. Doug Dixon & Associates (DDA) was retained by the City of Toronto to undertake a detailed condition survey, detailed steel/fatigue inspection, and structural/fatigue evaluation of these 60 year-old bridges. The fieldwork included the delamination survey of the concrete elements, deck condition survey, and close-up inspection/non-destructive testing of structural steel members. DDA engineers created refined bridge models to analyze forces and determine the estimated fatigue life of critical fatigue details. Based on the findings of the field inspection and evaluation, DDA provided recommendations for future rehabilitation works. To facilitate fieldwork in the busy Toronto Downtown core, DDA coordinated road/lane closures of urban expressways/roadways, Metrolinx corridor access/flagging protection, and entry to private/public properties.
