F.G. Gardiner Bents (2018 – 2019)
F.G. Gardiner Expressway, Structure Rehabilitation
City of Toronto – Toronto, Ontario
Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. (DDA) were retained by the City of Toronto to inspect the condition of the reinforced concrete Bents. An evaluation was also completed in compliance with the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code. The results of the inspection and evaluation suggested a rehabilitation was feasible. DDA recommended concrete refacing using self-consolidating concrete. To enhance the rehabilitation, DDA also recommended the use of passive galvanic corrosion protection as part of the rehabilitation. Due to the deterioration condition of the ends of the Bents, the exterior steel girders within each span had to be temporarily supported on scaffolding while the bearing seats were repaired. DDA established the jacking loads based on the evaluation completed. Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. prepared the contract documents and had the contract ready for tender in less than four (4) months from the award of the assignment. DDA provided the City with Contract Administration and Construction Inspection of the work by providing a full-time resident inspection engineer on-site during the construction.
