McMillan Bridge
Investigation & Evaluation
County of Brant – Brant, Ontario
The McMillan Rd Bridge was originally constructed in 1965 and spans over the Fairchild Creek on McMillan Road. It is a three-span continuous slab on steel girder structure with span lengths of 12.2 m, 15.2 m, and 12.2 m. Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. (DDA) was retained by the County of Brant to undertake a detailed field investigation, including a detailed deck condition survey and an evaluation of the bridge. Based on the evaluation and inspection, recommendations for rehabilitation were developed. A life cycle cost analysis was completed to compare the alternatives and a final recommendation was provided. The recommended solution was to complete a deck replacement with a semi-integral abutment conversion. DDA designed the new deck system including additional shear connectors between deck and girders, asphalt, and waterproofing. Modifications to the existing abutments and wingwalls were also designed to enable the semi-integral conversion and the bearing seat was modified to accommodate the road profile. Cleaning and coating of the girder ends was also recommended to further extend the life of the girders. The recommended rehabilitation is expected to extend the service life of the structure by 75 years. DDA completed Preliminary Design, Detailed Design, Contract Preparation and Tendering Assistance for the County of Brant. DDA also provided Engineering Assistance, Part-time Inspection and Contract Administration during construction. The project completed construction in October 2023 ahead of schedule and under budget.
