NFBC QUEENSTON AND RAINBOW CANADA PLAZA REPAIRS (2021-2022)
DESIGN AND ENGINEERING SUPPORT IN CONSTRUCTION
Niagara Falls Bridge Commission – Niagara Falls, Ontario
Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. (DDA) was retained by the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission to quantify the deterioration at both sites and develop repair details for the various work required to rehabilitate the Plazas and the Bridge expansion joints and approach slabs. DDA spent two (2) days in the field gathering information and quantifying the extent of the deterioration at the sites. Repair methodologies were then identified including cross-stitching to rehabilitate longitudinal cracks, full and partial depth repair details for delaminated and spalled concrete, and the replacement of three (3) thermal expansion joints in the concrete pavement. Milling and paving of the deteriorated asphalt was also recommended. DDA completed the Preliminary Design, Detailed Design, Contract Preparation and Tendering Assistance for the project. During Detailed Design and Contract Preparation, close attention was paid to the importance of maintaining traffic flow in both the Plazas during Construction. Operational constraints were used to inform the Contractor of the various requirements for Traffic Control in each of the Plazas. During Construction, DDA provided Engineering Support to the Project Team. This included completing submission reviews, chaining construction meetings and responding to Contractor submission questions. Additionally, during Construction, primary stakeholders from the Plazas were involved in Project Meetings. It was part of DDA’s responsibility to ensure that Construction disruptions were kept to a minimum and that the stakeholder needs were advocated for and met. Construction is underway and expected to be completed by November 2022.
