Ship Channel Bridge
Rehabilitation Design
City of Toronto – Toronto, Ontario
The Cherry Street Ship Channel Bridge is one of only two remaining operating Strauss Trunnion Bascule Bridges in Canada. The bridge was constructed in 1930 by the Canadian Bridge Company. Doug Dixon & Associates Inc. (DDA) was retained by Ports Toronto to undertake the rehabilitation design of the structure in order to maintain the structure life for another 75 years. Part 1 of the design included the rehabilitation of the approach spans, complete with a new floor beam and stringer system and patch repairs to the existing substructure. Additionally, a new watermain support system was designed to support the existing watermain below the approach spans. Part 2 of the design includes the rehabilitation of the bascule span. Steel repairs of complexity varying from strengthening of corroded members to component replacement are being detailed. Also included in this work is a mechanical and electrical upgrade to the operating system which DDA is coordinating with Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE), Ports Toronto’s electrical and mechanical consultant. DDA has completed the inspection, design and contract preparation for Part 1 of the work. Part 1 is currently under construction with DDA as the Contract Administrator. DDA is also responsible for the inspection, design, contract preparation and overall project management of Part 2 of the work. Design is currently underway with construction anticipated to start in late 2024. DDA will also act as the Contract Administration for Part 2 of the work.
