PRAIRIE SIDING SWING BRIDGE (2019)
INSPECTION, EVALUATION, RECOMMENDATION
Regional Municipality of Chatham-Kent – Chatham, Ontario
The Prairie Siding Swing Bridge is a four-span bridge over the Thames River in Chatham, Ontario. The bridge was built in 1984 and consists of two (2) concrete slabs on steel girder spans with a two (2) span equal arms center pivot swing span.

ARCHIE DUCKWORTH BRIDGE (2019)
INSPECTION AND REHABILITATION DESIGN
County of Simcoe – Angus, Ontario
The Archie Duckworth Bridge was constructed in 1973. It is a two-span (18.2m – 27.4m) bridge consisting of a cast in place post-tensioned span and cantilever half-span, completed with a precast concrete girder “drop on” span. The bridge is located on Centre Street in the Village of Angus and carries two (2) lanes of traffic. The bridge is skewed 24 degrees.
Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. were retained by the County of Simcoe to undertake a Detailed Deck Condition Survey, Structure Inspection, Preliminary Design, Life Cycle Cost Estimate, Schedule A⁺ EA and Contract Preparation for the rehabilitation of the bridge.
BAILEY CREEK BRIDGE (2019)
INSPECTION AND REHABILITATION DESIGN
County of Simcoe – Adjala Tosoronntio, Ontario
The Bailey Creek Bridge was constructed in 1969. It is a single-span bridge that measures 15.4 metres in span length and an overall structure width of 11.1 metres.
Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. were retained by the County of Simcoe to undertake a Detailed Deck Condition Survey, Structure Inspection, Preliminary Design, Life Cycle Cost Estimate, Schedule A⁺ EA and Contract Preparation for the rehabilitation of the bridge.
BAYVIEW AVENUE BRIDGE OVER WEST DON RIVER (2019)
INSPECTION, EVALUATION, RECOMMENDATION
City of Toronto – Toronto, Ontario
This 275 m deck truss bridge was built in 1929 and reconstructed in 1969 and 1994.
Doug Dixon & Associates Inc. was retained by the City of Toronto to undertake a Detailed Deck Condition Survey, Structural Steel Inspection, Fatigue Evaluation and Non-destructive Testing as well as a recommendation for rehabilitation or replacement.
F.G. GARDINER EXPRESSWAY (2018)
SUBSTRUCTURE REHABILITATION
City of Toronto – Toronto, ON
The F.G. Gardiner Expressway was constructed in the late 1950s. The structure has been rehabilitated on a number of occasions.
Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. were retained by the City of Toronto to undertake an Inspection, Evaluation, Detailed Design, Contract Preparation, Contract Administration and Construction Inspection for the substructure repairs.
GOBLES ROAD CN OVERPASS (2018)
BRIDGE REPLACEMENT
DAGMAR Construction – Gobles, Ontario
The Gobles Road Bridge originally was a three-span steel through plate girder structure built in 1924.
Doug Dixon & Associates Inc. provided bridge design services to DAGMAR Construction Limited in a Design Build Contract with CN to undertake a Detailed Design, Construction Liaison and Site Inspection for this bridge replacement.
INDIAN LINE ROAD BRIDGE (2018 – 2020)
STRUCTURE REHABILITATION

Indian Line Road Bridge is a four (4) lane, single 16 m span reinforced concrete slab on precast concrete AASHTO Girders.
Doug Dixon & Associates Inc. was retained by the City of Toronto to undertake an Inspection/Assessment, Evaluation, Comparison of Options, Life Cycle Cost, Detailed Design, Contract Administration for this bridge replacement.
KEATING CHANNEL BASCULE BRIDGE (2019)
EMERGENCY REPAIRS
Ports Toronto – Toronto, Ontario
Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. (DDA) provided bridge engineering design services for the emergency repairs in August 2019 to close the leaf which was stuck in the up position. As a result of machinery failure, the City of Toronto/Ports Toronto was unable to close the bridge which became stuck in the open position.
Doug Dixon and Associates Inc., along with Stafford Bandlow Engineering (a Division of WJE) and FACCA Construction worked with Ports Toronto to develop a procedure to stabilize the bridge in the open position and a method to close the bridge using cranes and winches. Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. undertook Inspection, Designed Temporary Works, Field Review and Drawing Preparation for this emergency repair.
LAWRENCE EAST TTC PEDESTRIAN TUNNEL (2019)
SONCIN CONSTRUCTION (DESIGN/BUILD) FOR METROLINX
Soncin Construction – Toronto, Ontario
At the Lawrence East Subway Station, there was an existing pedestrian tunnel that carries Metrolinx tracks and TTC Subway tracks. As part of the Metrolinx Expansion of an additional third track, a portion of the existing tunnel required replacement as it was not designed for Class 1 rail loading.
Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. was the structural consultant to Soncin Construction Inc. for the replacement of a section of the pedestrian tunnel. Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. undertook the Detailed Design, Temporary Works/Shoring, Approvals and Construction Inspection.
CHERRY STREET SHIP CHANNEL BRIDGE (2019)
Ports Toronto – Toronto, Ontario
The 1930 Cherry Street Ship Channel Bridge is one of only two remaining operating Strauss Trunnion Bascule Bridges in Canada. The bridge has an approach span on each side of the bascule span.
Doug Dixon & Associates Inc. was retained by Ports Toronto to undertake an Inspection, Detailed Design, Contract Preparation and Construction Liaison during the repairing of the approach spans.
TWENTY CULVERT REHABILITATIONS (2018)
City of Toronto – Toronto, ON
Doug Dixon and Associates Inc., as a subconsultant to WSP Canada, undertook the rehabilitation design of seven (7) of twenty (20) culverts, located in the North York and Scarborough areas of the City.
Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. undertook Inspection, Evaluation, Detailed Design, Contract Preparation, Approval, Construction Administration and Construction Inspection for seven (7) culverts (2020).
WASAUKSING SWING BRIDGE (2019)
BRIDGE REPLACEMENT – PRELIMINARY DESIGN
Wasauksing First Nation
The Wasauksing Swing Bridge is an equal arm through steel truss on a centre pier. The bridge was constructed in 1912 as a railway bridge. In 1987 the bridge was converted into a road bridge carrying a single lane of traffic regulated by traffic signals. There are seventeen timber trestle spans on the west approach and twelve on the east approach. The total length of the bridge is 162m of which 30.8m is the swing span.
As a subconsultant to Mooney Metaxas Engineering Inc., Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. provided the bridge engineer expertise for Conceptual Design, Cost Estimate, Life Cycle Cost Analysis, Constructability Review and Preliminary Design for a replacement bridge on a new alignment.
WATERFRONT TORONTO – PORTLANDS NEW BRIDGE (2019)

As part of the Portlands Flood Protection Project, Entuitive Engineering was awarded a contract for the preliminary and detailed design of four (4) new bridges. Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. was part of the design team to develop new designs for two (2) Cherry Street North Crossings of the Keating Channel (56.1 m), one (1) three-span crossing of the New Don River for Cherry Street (110 m) and one four-span crossing for Commissioners Street over the New Don River (191 m).
Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. provided assistant with Technical advice, Review of drawings/documents, Input into operation and maintenance and Life Cycle Cost Analysis.
WEST MONTROSE COVERED BRIDGE (2018)
EVALUATION AND OPTIONS ASSESSMENT

The West Montrose Covered Bridge was constructed in 1881. It consists of two (2) 30-meter-spans. In 1959 a rehabilitation by the Ministry of Transportation-Ontario added a single steel Bailey Bridge truss to “assist” with the support of the timber trusses. The Region of Waterloo assumed ownership of the bridge in 1998.
Doug Dixon & Associates Inc. undertook an Inspection, Structural Evaluation, Conceptual Design, Cost Estimate and Report Preparation for an upgrading of this covered timber bridge.

METROLINX HUMBER RIVER BRIDGE (2018)
SUPERSTRUCTURE REPLACEMENT

The West Montrose Covered Bridge was constructed in 1881. It consists of two (2) 30-meter-spans. ALL BRIDGES AND CULVERTS (2019-2025)
BIENNIAL (OSIM) AND DETAILED INSPECTIONS
City of Toronto – Toronto, Ontario
Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. are retained by the City of Toronto for this ongoing multi-year assignment for the biennial visual inspection, in accordance with OSIM, of 581 roadway structures, 267 parks pedestrian structures and the elevated portion of the F.G. Gardiner Expressway. The assignment includes three, 2-year inspection cycles. The work includes inspection using Bridgemaster, inside of Box girder inspection and inspection from manlifts to get “clear view” of the structure and perform enhanced inspection as identified. The inspection also involves contacting stakeholders including TTC, CNR, CNE, Private Property Owners etc. as well as providing traffic control. The work also includes entering all the inspection data in Bridge Management System (BMS) and completing summary action reports. Additionally, the assignment also includes hammer sounding inspection of FGG underside twice a year and supervision during controlled concrete chipping operation each year.
F.G.GARDINER EXPRESSWAY ELEVATED SECTION (2018)
OSIM INSPECTION

Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. were retained by WSP to complete visual inspection in accordance with OSIM including completing reports in BMS of underside of the F.G.Gardiner Expressway (FGG) elevated portion. The FGG has more than 300 spans and each span were considered as an individual structure for the purpose of inspection and reporting in BMS. Manlifts and traffic control were used to get “clear view” of structure elements including bearings, girder ends, deck end and diaphragms.
F.G.GARDINER ELEVATED SECTION (2018)
HAMMER SOUNDING AND CHIPPING SUPERVISION
City of Toronto – Toronto, Ontario
Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. were retained by the City of Toronto for hammer sounding inspection of the underside of the F.G. Gardiner Expressway elevated portion and supervision during controlled concrete chipping operation. Total two (2) rounds of hammer sounding, one in spring and one in fall, were completed as part of the assignment. The work also included marking deterioration physically on the structure and on the sketches. The work also involved contacting stakeholders including TTC, CNE, Private Property Owners etc. as well as providing necessary traffic control.
DOWNSVIEW PARK BRIDGE STRUCTURES (2017)
OSIM INSPECTION
City of Toronto – Toronto, Ontario
Doug Dixon and Associates Inc. were retained to complete OSIM inspections of all structures within Downsview Park including producing OSIM reports using MS Access database. The work also included providing Performance Deficiencies, Maintenance Needs and Recommended work as required for OSIM reports.
